Samsung AustinSamsung Electronics has announced that it will build its first 300mm fab outside of Korea. The new fab will be built adjacent to its 200mm facility in Austin, Texas. Samsung recently finished a $500 million US dollar, 34,000-square-foot expansion and upgrade at its Austin fab. .

Construction of the new 300mm fab is expected to start in the next few months at an initial cost of $220 million US dollars and should be completed in the second half of 2007. Total expenditure to reach full capacity could take the investment above $4.0 billion US dollars. The company did not give specific details as to the size of the facility or expected wafer start capacity. It is likely that the new fab will capable of manufacturing both DRAM and NAND Flash devices with emphasis on NAND Flash. .

The company stated that the new fab expenditure was separate to its capital expenditure projections outline earlier in the year of around $6.0 billion US dollars of which $5.0 billion is being allocated the memory capacity, primarily NAND Flash. .

Local Austin news reports estimated that 900 new jobs would be created at the facility.
