Intel’s once a year promotion of suppliers Print E-mail
Mar 21, 2006 at 06:48 PM
It's that time again for Intel Corp to allow suppliers to actually be associated with the chip manufacturing giant through its Preferred Quality Supplier (PQS) awards. As has been the rule for many years, suppliers are not allowed to mention business relations with Intel such as new order wins or technology alliances etc... However Intel via its PQS awards gives some insight into those companies Intel not only purchases from but those that have made significant contributions to manufacturing and general corporate needs over the past year.

As has been noted for many years, Intel has demonstrated a strong allegiance to Japanese suppliers who regularly feature in either the outstanding contributors section or most improved.

Some times a few surprises emerge while some regular faces seem to crop up as a matter of course as well as some swings from one like for like competitor one year to the next.

Interestingly two wafer substrate suppliers (Komatsu & Siltronic) got the nod this year, compared to only one last year. Komatsu was also honored last year. Other Japanese companies honored from the front-end fab perspective included NuFlare Technology, TOK, Fuji Film Electronic materials, Daifuku and Moses Lake Industries (Tama Chemicals).

See what I mean about Japanese suppliers?

One other notable inclusion in the 2005 awards was TSMC the largest foundry on the block. I might be wrong but this is the first time they have received an award though they have been fabricating chips for Intel for many years.

So for all the suppliers starved of publicity around the giant of the semiconductor industry here is your moment of fame for the year.
