Micron buys 200mm fab from ZiLOG for CMOS image sensor production Print E-mail

ImageMicron Technology, has purchased a Zilog's shuttered 200mm fab in Nampa, Idaho, from ZiLOG, Inc. Micron plans to shift CMOS image sensor production, currently one of many products produced at its 200mm fab in Boise, Idaho to the old ZiLOG fab by the end of 2006.

"Micron is the world's leading supplier of advanced image sensor solutions in applications ranging from mobile camera phones and PC cameras to healthcare, security and automotive markets," said Steve Appleton, Micron chairman, CEO and president. "This acquisition allows us to move the final stages of image sensor silicon processing and other critical manufacturing steps from our Boise manufacturing operations to this new facility, which at the same time will free up space in our existing facilities and allow us to continue to meet expanding demand for our products."

Micron purchased the 8-inch wafer fabrication facility and surrounding land from ZiLOG and its affiliate, ZiLOG Mod III, Inc., for $5 million US dollars. ZiLOG Mod III received about $3.9 million for the facility and 19 acres of the surrounding land, and ZiLOG received $1 million for its vacant 19 acres at the site. Micron also expects to hire operators, technicians and support staff at the facility.

In June 2004, ZiLOG announced that STMicroelectronics would purchase the vast majority of the 200mm tool set at the MOD III facility for $26 million US dollars. ZiLOG had closed its fabs as part of a strategy to become fables.
