In preliminary figures from iSuppli, Spansion, took back
top-spot in NOR Flash memory sales for the fourth quarter 2005.
Spansion's revenues topped $601 million, compared to Intel's total of
$600 million. Spansion had lost the top-spot in 3Q05 to Intel.
In the fourth quarter Spansion and STMicroelectronics increased sales by about
15 percent from $523 million and $335 million respectfully, in the third
quarter. Intel's NOR flash sales rose by only 5 percent.
Average Selling Prices (ASPs) increased due to higher-density products and a
mobile phone market growth of 15 percent in the quarter.
Intel, according to iSuppli was hit by a
capacity crunch, limiting potential growth.
"Acknowledging Intel's NOR capacity constraints in the fourth quarter, iSuppli
believes both Spansion and STMicroelectronics captured market share from Intel
during that period," said Mark DeVoss, senior analyst, flash memory for
iSuppli.
Intel's flash-memory division and Spansion reported losses of $12 million and
$48 million respectively in the fourth quarter, according to the research firm.
