Powerchip
Semiconductor (PSC) has bought a 300mm shuttered fab from struggling Macronix
to boost production of NAND Flash for contract customer's such as Renasas Technology
and for its own use.
Rumours had surfaced
last week that a purchase by PSC was on the cards. Now PSC plans to double
capital expenditure this year, up from around $1 billion US dollars to around
$1.9 billion as it plans to aggressively ramp the new fab while continuing
plans to ramp Fab 12B to capacity.
The Macronix fab was
completed in 2002, but was never fitted out with production tools and has been
shuttered ever-since and has an estimated capacity of 35,000 wafer starts per
month.
The deal is expected
to be completed at the beginning of April.
