With Applied Materials exiting the mainstream ion implanter market, the two main protagonists remaining, Varian and Axcelis, were expected to pick over the $200 million in scraps left by Applied.Write Comment (0 comments) |

(Updated) There is no hope for IBM corporate clowns who seem so enthusiastic in killing off any technical semiconductor process breakthrough, as they spin it in such a way that you end up feeling rather queasy.

In February, Intel said that its first microprocessors using its 45nm process would be brought forward into late 2007 compared to a previous expectation of early 2008. First working wafers were produced only a few months ago so wafers yields must have been acceptable to potentially speed the migration.

The news that Qimonda is to build a new 300mm fab in Singapore is no real surprise as its newest 300mm fab in Richmond, Virginia has been ramping at a good pace since Infineon spun off the division.

With quarterly conference calls coming thick and fast, it has already become very apparent that the recent wave of market forecast reductions for the industry are now impacting the equipment suppliers. Novellus, Lam, Cymer and Semitool have all stated that they experienced
varying levels of tool order push-outs in the first quarter, with much
of these by at least two quarters!

The price war with Intel is taking its toll on AMD, but that is an over-simplification of the dynamics at play. Hector intimated that a new management task force would work on moving the company to an asset-lite business model that included very significant restructuring.Write Comment (0 comments) |

Listening to Intel's first quarter conference call late last night was a little disturbing for a few reasons. Firstly, the lack of clarity over perceived market share gains: only a few quarters ago, Otellini and Bryant were happy to state to analysts that they were winning market share back from AMD. However, the reality was rather different.

Last week Toshiba pumped out some impressive figures regarding capital expenditure plans and fab capacity increases. Over the next three years, Toshiba will spend approximately US$8.5 billion on its semiconductor division.
The majority of this spending is expected to assist the ramp of Fab 3 to 150,000wspm and enable Fab 4, its latest 300mm fab, to reach 210,000wspm.

Though I avoid commentary on patent spats at almost all cost (pun intended) the news that Nova and Nanometrics have ended litigation really is a no brainer!
Neither side won, no cash changed hands (as far as the vaguely worded press releases can be trusted) and all for what? One year's agreement not to sue each other!

My electronic purchases have started to worry me! Late last year, I agonized over at specialist websites concerning which new laptop to purchase for home use rather than business. Knowing that what I needed was a help but not as much of a help as I expected, as trying to find the right spec (regardless of make) proved almost impossible for the price range I had in mind.
