Feb 15, 2007 at 04:16 PM
The sad news that Applied Materials is to pull out of the ion-implant business and close its operations in Horsham, UK, with the loss of nearly 300 jobs is a big blow to the equipment industry that remains in the country. Having visited and met many people at the Horsham facility over the years, the news is much closer to home than usual when news like this is released.

Yield myths at 65nm! Print E-mail
Feb 12, 2007 at 11:22 AM
Although Intel Corp. plans to start volume production at the 45nm node later this year, the leading-edge node for the rest of the CMOS logic community will be 65nm. This simple statement lays the foundation for a host of misconceptions about the 65nm node having been ‘cracked,' and that volume production at high yields is a given.

Spansion can’t stop sniping at Intel Print E-mail
Feb 02, 2007 at 11:41 AM
As a separate legal entity these days, Spansion still can't drag itself away from taking as many snipes as it can against its old foe Intel. In a very short and innocuous press release, highlighting the tool installation of 300mm equipment at its R&D facility, more thought was given to subtle digs at Intel than actually about the investment in leading-edge equipment.Write Comment (0 comments)

One of the first lessons I had in the semiconductor industry concerned ‘fab capacity.' This simple term is meant to describe the number of wafers a fab can produce when fully equipped and operating at full throttle. The cleanroom is bursting with tools, operators and in-process wafers. No matter what you do, the output becomes a constant, hence ‘capacity.'

Jan 29, 2007 at 08:20 PM
Once again we have endured not one but three announcements concerning breakthroughs in metal gate materials and high-k dielectrics. I use the term ‘endured' as any details that could be called facts and figures were completely absent!

ASM International says thanks for the memory! Print E-mail
Jan 25, 2007 at 12:04 AM

After a tumultuous 2006, ASM International could be renamed ‘Houdini Technologies' as it fended off an investor revolt with improved Front-end equipment sales performance and a degree of concessions to investors over its operational transparency!

Before the company reports fourth quarter financials, it has wisely provided an update to its front-end operations, which could lead to profitability in 2007, after five years or so of losses.
