Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, has announced the opening of a new state-of-the-art cleanroom environment on the campus to give microelectronics and technology students the experience of working within the dust-free surroundings required of their profession. The lab, funded by Masaryk University and ON Semiconductor, will see basic silicon technology and microelectronics R&D activities carried out and will hold the potential for use in future advanced technology activities.

The 6th annual NVIDIA Fellowship awards are underway; Fellowship recipients have been named and announced by Dr. David Kirk, chief scientist for NVIDIA. The Fellowship awards are considered to be indications of prestige among Ph.D. students, whose studies must, in order for eligibility, encompass the realm of computer and electrical engineering, system architectures or related fields.

ASML has started a recruitment drive for its newly established Center of Excellence (ACE) near Taipei, Taiwan that is intended to offer customers technology support and applications development, equipment support, training, logistics, and refurbishment. The current state of affairs at Transmeta has followed in much the same vein as in the past few months. The company cut approximately 80 jobs in early February (see link below) and has recently announced that it has cut another 55 jobs, effective as of the 31st of March, 2007. The company now consists of 65 employees.

ASML Holding NV has announced a scholarship fund that will benefit students of technology. The master's scholarship, entitled the Henk Bodt ASML - TU/e Scholarship Fund, is jointly funded by ASML and Eindhoven University of Technology and is named after Henk Bodt, who has announced his retirement after 12 years as chairman of the ASML Supervisory Board. The scholarship offers full tuition and living expenses for the duration of the two-year master's program, and also guarantees the scholar a three-year contract for a high-technology position at ASML.

FSI International has announced that it is cutting costs to move back into profitability with the loss of approximately 62 jobs - 11 percent - of its workforce due to slower than projected sales and equipment order delays.

NXP Semiconductors has said it will close its fab in Boeblingen, Germany by the end of 2007 with the loss of 550 jobs. The move is due to poor production utilization, according to NXP, which will now shift production to its fabs in Nijmegen and Hamburg.

Having secured further funding from the Government of Flanders through the period 2007-2011, IMEC is planning to hire approximately 100 extra people in 2007. The jobs cover all aspects of IMEC's expanding operations, from process and hardware technicians and engineers, operators, finance and legal experts, to both junior and senior level researchers.

In a drive to improve operational efficiencies, Advanced Energy Industries is planning to transfer the production of its Dressler RF power product line - including the Cesar power generator line - from its manufacturing site in Stolberg, Germany to its Shenzhen, China, and Fort Collins, Colorado facilities, which are the main manufacturing facilities for AE. The transfer will affect 65 employees based at the Stolberg facility, which was acquired in 2002 with the acquisition of Dressler HF Technik GmbH.
