UMC struggling to ramp 300mm fabs in 2006 Print E-mail

ImageUMC, the second largest pure-play semiconductor foundry, is continuing to struggle to ramp its leading edge 300mm fabs in 2006. Cited by UMC executives as a key priority this year, especially resuming the ramp at Fab 12i in Singapore after stalling in the second half of 2005 (see figure 1 below), the foundry has seen only a small increase in wafer starts in the first nine months of 2006 (see figure 2 below).

Micron capital spending to peak at $4 billion in fiscal 2007 Print E-mail

ImageMicron Technology plans to spend in the region of $4 billion US dollars in its fiscal 2007 period, the company announced, as part of its fiscal fourth quarter declarations. Sipex becomes fabless with closure of Milpitas bipolar fab Print E-mail

ImageSipex Corporation has finally closed its Hillview facility in Milpitas, California, a year after declaring it would become a fabless company. The company is now fabricating its analog products at Hangzhou Silan Microelectronics Co., Ltd. and Hangzhou Silan Integrated Circuit Co., Ltd., located in Hangzhou, China. Both its BiPolar and BiCMOS processes and fab tools have been transferred to the Chinese foundry.

Spansion & Fujitsu agree fab sale & foundry pact Print E-mail

ImageFujitsu Limited will acquire outright two 200mm fabs - JV1 and JV2 - located in Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima prefecture, Japan, previously owned jointly with Spansion Inc. Fujitsu will pay Spansion approximately $150 million in cash in calendar Q2 2007, and will continue production of its Flash memory products as a foundry for Spansion.

Infineon’s new fab in Malaysia to employ 1700 Print E-mail

InfineonInfineon Technologies AG has officially opened a $1 billion 200mm fab in Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Malaysia, that will produce power semiconductors for the company. At full capacity (100,000wspm) the fab will employ about 1,700 people Infineon said.
