Inotera Memories is on track to set one of the fastest 300mm fab ramp rate records this year at its new 300mm DRAM facility, Fab-2. The Taiwan memory manufacturer previously achieved one of the fastest 300mm fab ramps with its first 300mm fab, achieving an average monthly ramp rate of approximately 3,000wspm over a 24 month period to reach full capacity of over 60,000wspm from initial production start-up.Write Comment (0 comments) |

According to a new study not previously undertaken by market research firm IC Insights, Samsung, TSMC, Intel, Toshiba, and UMC had the five largest shares of the world's wafer capacity at the end of 2006, with combined capacity of just over 2.9 million wafers per month (in 200mm-equivalent wafers), which included all wafer sizes.

At a ceremony held on June 14, Samsung Electronics has officially opened its first 300mm fab in North America, located in Austin, Texas. The opening was attended by Texas Governor Rick Perry and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman & CEO Jong-Yong Yun, amongst other dignitaries.

Thin-film silicon solar photovoltaic module manufacturer Signet Solar has announced plans to ultimately produce 1 gigawatt (GW) in annual production of solar modules over the next ten years at a new plant to be built in India at an estimated final cost of approximately $2 billion U.S. dollars.

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has secured a loan worth $610 million for the purchase of process equipment from U.S. tool suppliers as part of the foundry's plans to expand capacity at its 300mm facility, Fab 7.

In response to recent ISMI-held workshops on ‘Green Fab' strategies and ‘Fab Energy Conservation' programs, International SEMATECH Manufacturing Initiative members have agreed to draft a "green fab standard" aimed at building semiconductor factories that will use less energy and water, and minimize waste and air pollution.

Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) has said that it is planning to use Fab8A, its 200mm facility that has a dedicated foundry, in a 100 percent owned subsidiary to be called Maxchip.

There has been much speculation over the future of Texas Instruments' shuttered new 300mm fab in Richardson, Texas - dubbed RFab - since the chip manufacturer announced that it would stop internal manufacturing of digital CMOS devices in favour of foundry agreements.
