Chartered taps Japanese banks for Fab 7 expansion Print E-mail

Fab 7Chartered Semiconductor has signed an agreement for a $300 million term loan facility from Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). Under the conditions of the deal, Chartered is obliged to spend the loan with Japanese-based equipment companies. The loan supports the Phase 2 ramp of Fab 7.

Spansion starts production at first 300mm fab Print E-mail

SP1Spansion has confirmed that it has started production at its first 300mm fab, SP1, located in Aizu, Japan. SP1 is the first facility that has produced NOR flash memory employing 300mm wafers and initial ramp to 15,000 wafer starts per month, and uses Spansion’s 65nm ‘MirrorBit’ technology at a cost of $1.2 billion.

Intel starts construction of first fab in Asia Print E-mail

ImageOn September 8, 2007, Intel Corporation had a groundbreaking ceremony for its first 300mm front-end fab in Asia, with the facility located in Dalian, China. Dubbed Fab 68, the initial investment is said to be $2.5 billion with an eventual investment of $4 billion, according to the company.

Tower taps AMD & Intel for used 200mm equipment Print E-mail

ImageTower Semiconductor has said that it has secured used 200mm processing equipment from AMD and Intel amongst other non-specified chip manufacturers as part of its cost-effective strategy to ramp Fab2 beyond the current 24,000 wafer starts per month capacity.

Wuxi JV sells C1 200mm line to Chinese conglomerate Print E-mail

ImageThe joint venture fab operations between Hynix and STMicroelectronics, located in Wuxi, China have signed a contract to sell the equipment of C1, one of its 200mm production lines, to a Chinese conglomerate, China Resources (Holdings) Co., Ltd.

Freescale’s fabs in Scotland up for grabs Print E-mail

ImageFreescale Semiconductor has officially placed its two semiconductor fabs in Scotland up for sale. The facilities include an operational 150mm semiconductor manufacturing facility in East Kilbride and a 200mm wafer fabrication shell in Dunfermline.

Order Win: Global IC manufacturer places new order with AMSC for fab power safety Print E-mail

ImageA major U.S.-based semiconductor chip manufacturer has placed a follow-on order for AMSC's Power Quality Industrial Voltage Restorer (PQ-IVR) system for one of its large wafer fabrication facilities in Southeast Asia. This is the first order for a PQ-IVR to be shipped outside the U.S. and is the second order from this customer, according to AMSC. The company expects to commission the system in the first half of 2008.

Toshiba’s Fab 4 to start volume NAND production in December Print E-mail

ImageThe Joint Venture NAND flash memory operations of Toshiba and SanDisk have said that the world's largest 300mm fab will start volume production in December 2007. Fab 4 has now been officially opened with a first phase ramp target of 80,000 wafer starts per month (wspm) employing 56nm technology by the second half of 2008.

Order Win: Asyst awarded first volume production order for new conveyor system Print E-mail

ImageA large Japanese memory manufacturer has given Asyst Technologies its first volume production order for its ‘Velocity' HTC (High-Throughput Conveyor) automation system. Previously, the company had only undertaken trials in fabs in Singapore and Texas. The Velocity HTC system will be used in a new ‘Mega Fab' facility and also used to connect two 300mm fabs for greater manufacturing flexibility.

ProMOS to fab CMOS image sensors at 300mm fab via Toppan IP license Print E-mail

ImageToppan Printing Co. has expanded its manufacturing footprint for CMOS image sensors with a technology licensing deal with ProMOS Technologies related to Toppan's ‘On-chip Color Filters' and ‘Micro Lenses' technology. Toppan had previously set up a Joint Venture company with SMIC of China, dubbed Toppan SMIC Electronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (TSES), which had been in production since January 2006.
