Samsung to start volume production of GDDR4 in 2Q06 Print E-mail

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. said today that it has developed the fastest graphics memory chip. The GDDR4 (Graphics Double Data Rate 4th Generation) memory processes gaming and video images at 2.5-gigabits per second (Gbps), according to Samsung.Write Comment (0 comments)

Intel to build Fab 11X extension Print E-mail

Intel Corporation has announced an extension to its 300mm fab in Rio Rancho, New Mexico that will cost $650 million. Work at Fab 11X will start straight away and will come on stream in early 2007. 300 additional jobs will be created, according to Intel.Write Comment (0 comments)

Elpida Memory Inc. has increased its capital expenditure for its current 2006 financial year in an attempt to increase market share in non-commodity DRAM and reduce production costs by increasing capacity at its E300, 300mm fab in Japan. Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has announced its third quarter financial results, that saw capacity utilisation rise coupled to a significant reduction in losses. Cypress shut fabs due to power outages Print E-mail

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. stated in its third quarter financial press release that the company suffered several power-outs during the quarter due to lightning storms that impacted revenues and meant the company had $24 million US dollars of backlog going into the fourth quarter. AMD Fab 36:Cleanroom garment cleaning kept in-house Print E-mail

With the wave to out-source many of the percieved non-core fab functions, it was interesting to find out during AMD's Fab 36 opening that garment cleaning services were conducted in-house at a facility within AMD's Fab 30. Samsung to build eight 300mm production fabs by 2012 Print E-mail

Samsung Electronics has announced major new 300mm fabs planned to be built over the next seven years. The capex budget has been set at $33 billion US dollars, which will be spread over eight (8) 300mm fabs and one advanced R&D facility. Samsung stated that the next generation R&D line "NRD" will cost $860 million US dollars and will be completed in May 2006. The NRD facility will be dedicated to nano and advanced silicon processes for both memory and logic devices below the 50nm node.
