Micron invests in new semiconductor materials lab Print E-mail

ImageMicron Technology has invested nearly $1 million into a newly established laboratory at the University of Washington that will be dedicated to researching materials for future semiconductor devices that the chip manufacturer plans to fabricate. The Micron Foundation helped launch the new lab with more than $400,000 in equipment spending and $500,000 in cash.

AZ Electronic Materials gains new shared owner Print E-mail

ImageAZ Electronic Materials now has two equal shareowners after The Carlyle Group sold a 50 percent stake in the specialty electronics company it bought from Clariant in 2004. The new investment partner is Vestar Capital Partners, an international private equity firm specializing in management buyouts and growth capital investments.

Memory manufacturers fuelled silicon wafer demand in 2006, says SEMI Print E-mail

Wafer reclaim specialist Pure Wafer buys US rival Exsil, Inc. Print E-mail

LabIn a bid to grow its market share of 300mm wafer reclaim contracts in the U.S., Pure Wafer plc has acquired Exsil, Inc., a wafer reclaim facility based in Arizona, from parent company Rockwood Specialties Group, Inc. for $11.2million in cash.

Air Products to add 500 metric tons of nitrogen trifluoride capacity Print E-mail

ImageAir Products has broken ground on the first phase of its new nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) plant in Ulsan, Korea, which on completion will add 500 metric tons of the chamber cleaning gas to Air Products' capacity. Annual production will reach 2,500 metric tons in 2008, according to the company.

EpichemUK-based high-purity chemical & gases company, Epichem Group, has been acquired by Sigma-Aldrich Corporation for $60 million in cash in an effort to expand its SAFC Hitech business that focuses on high-purity inorganics for a range of high technology applications. Epichem is best known for supplying high-purity boron products for ion implantation as well as precursors for ALD applications.

Softening semiconductor wafer demand aids solar growth at MEMC Print E-mail

MEMCThe lower utilization rates at semiconductor manufacturers - including foundries - are not having a negative affect on MEMC, a major wafer supplier. According to projections from Nabeel Gareeb, MEMC's chief executive officer, revenues are expected to grow as solar customers eagerly pick up the slack.

CMPCabot Microelectronics Corporation has seen a 6 percent drop in revenues in the fourth quarter of 2006 due to chip manufacturers reducing fab loadings as inventories are built, especially in the communications sector.

Praxair wins SMIC’s new 300mm fab bulk gases contract Print E-mail

FAB 8Praxair China has been awarded the contract to supply Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp's (SMIC) with bulk industrial gases at its new 300mm fab in Shanghai, China. SMIC's FAB 8 facility will start production at the 90nm node. Praxair also supplies SMIC's existing fabs in Shanghai and its 300mm wafer fab, Fab 4, in Beijing.
