UMC has said that it has successfully taped-out a test chip using libraries from ARM via its acquisition of Soisic last year, with 65nm feature sizes based on SOI wafer technology. The test chip consists of a set of ARM physical IP that uses a standard cell library, an I/O library and a single-port SRAM memory compiler, UMC said. UMC is the first Taiwanese-based foundry to offer SOI technology.

Aviza Technology and Air Liquide have agreed to extend the term of a joint development agreement (JDA) originally signed in April 2005 through to 2010. The JDA includes research into improvements in precursor materials used for advanced single wafer and batch deposition processes for dielectric and electrode applications. Although overall silicon wafer demand remained sluggish in the first quarter of 2007, Gartner believes that a second-quarter upturn is underway. This is being driven by demand for 300mm wafers, especially from memory manufacturers.

According to Link Consulting, advanced spin-on patterning materials will reach over $1.5 billion in sales in 2007 and reach over $2 billion in 2011 due to the continued complexities in patterning advanced semiconductors. Overall, Linx Consulting sees a shift in the supplier base of positive photoresists to Japan with JSR Micro and TOK achieving a combined share of 47 percent.

Soitec issued a cautious tone to its record setting revenues seen in 2006 as the adoption of SOI, especially on 300mm wafers, dramatically increased as IBM, AMD, Chartered and Sony ramped microprocessors.

Struggling Implant Sciences has sold Accurel Systems to the Evans Analytical Group with proceeds expected to be $12.7 million. Evans will also assume estimated liabilities of approximately $3,017,000, including equipment-related debt, Implant Sciences said.

Air Products has said that Samsung Austin Semiconductor's new 300mm memory manufacturing facility in Austin is now on-stream with its 450,000 standard cubic foot per hour (scf/hr) nitrogen generator.
