SunPower has said that it has entered into long-term supply contracts with new solar entrant NorSun AS, which will see SunPower purchase silicon in ingot and potentially wafer form to the tune of up to two gigawatts of solar cell production. In return, NorSun will buy polysilicon from SunPower at fixed annual volumes and prices. NorSun will provide SunPower cash advance payments for the polysilicon under this agreement.

Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments continued to grow, increasing nearly 5 percent during the second quarter of 2007 on figures for the first quarter of 2007, according to the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry.

WACKER CHEMIE AG and SCHOTT Solar have announced plans to jointly invest €370 million through 2012 in expanding multicrystalline silicon wafer production at facilities in Jena and Alzenau, Germany for solar cell production that is planned to generate one gigawatt/year by 2012. The joint venture would become one of the world's five largest solar-wafer manufacturers, according to the companies.

The worldwide silicon wafer market grew by 24 percent in revenue in 2006 and totaled $10.2 billion in revenues, according to Gartner's silicon wafer market survey, conducted by market analyst Takashi Ogawa.

SEMI's latest materials forecast projects that the global semiconductor materials market is expected to grow by over 10 percent in 2007, and is forecasted to grow another 10 percent in 2008. BASF has said that it has entered into an agreement with IBM to jointly develop electronic materials required that could be used in production at the 32nm node as part of its continuing ‘Common Platform' approach with other chip manufacturers in 2010 onwards.

The continued demand for polysilicon coming primarily from the solar cell industry has led to WACKER's starting ‘stage 8' of polysilicon production expansion at its Burghausen, Germany site by an additional 7,000 metric tons to a total of 21,500 metric tons per year.
